> DKIH: Nanocrystalline common mode chokes for 1- and 3-phase applications mount on PCB
SCHURTER expands its wide range of current compensated chokes with high current types for PCB mounting. The new DKIH series is now available with a nanocrystalline ring core, offering 8 times higher inductance performance than ferrite core versions in the same compact dimension. The new product is designed for single and three phase applications with rated currents from 10 to 50 amperes. Due to its open design, the chokes are light weight and compact, ideally designed to suppress EMI noise caused by power applications on the PCB.

Like all other aspects of electronic design, the power portion is oftentimes built today using discrete components on printed circuit boards. With the trending integration of components, to achieve smaller and smaller form factors, thermal problems and high currents on the PCB can become a challenge. Traditional block filters might well address these challenges, but their larger package size also presents challenges due to the mentioned space constraints; therefore an asymmetrical effective common mode choke and capacitors mounted on the PCB is a better solution.

The new DKIH-1 series is suitable for single phase AC or DC applications from 10 up to 50 amperes. Light weight and compact, the common mode chokes are easily placed on the PCB with through hole technology (THT). They are designed and approved according IEC 60938, UL 1283 and CSA 22.2 no. 8. The voltage rating is 300 VAC (IEC, UL) and 250 VAC (CSA) with an inductance range of 1.6 to 6.9 mH.

The new DKIH-3 series is suitable for three phase AC applications from 10 up to 50 amperes. The common mode chokes are also designed according IEC 60938 and are rated 600 VAC with an inductance range of 0.7 to 10.8 mH, making them suitable for many applications such as UPS systems, switching power supplies, charge stations for electric vehicles and frequency converters for energy storage.

The DKIH-1 and -3 have a wide temperature range of -40 to +100°C. They are available with a standard pin out or customer specific pin out. Variations in the winding are also available on request.

> FMAB NEO: Compact single-phase filter with high symmetrical attenuation
SCHURTER is expanding its range of block filters for single-phase systems with its new FMAB NEO series. This range of single-phase filters combines a compact design with a high level of performance. The use of large X capacitors permits high symmetrical attenuation.

The new FMAB NEO filter series boasts a compact design combined with high performance. All versions come with large X capacitors, which ensure high symmetrical attenuation in the lower frequency range. Symmetrical interferences can occur because of phase-angle controllers or semi-conductor relays, for example. When the power semiconductors switch, they generate interference currents between the phase conductor and the neutral conductor. These are known as symmetrical interferences, which the X capacitors positioned between these conductors can help reduce effectively.

The filters in the new series have a shiny steel housing with a closed filter base. The filter is thus effectively and completely shielded, no matter how it is mounted. The filter series is particularly suitable for equipment with high symmetrical interferences, such as devices with semiconductors that control high-power equipment such as professional coffee machines, devices with water heaters, and all types of industry electronics. The compact filters are also suitable for medical equipment and household appliances.

The filter series is available with plug-in connections or thread bolts (30 A version). A version with wire connection is also available. They have a metal flange for easy screw-on mounting on the housing.

The series of devices is designed for current levels from 1 A to 30 A at 250 VAC according to IEC and UL standards. It has ENEC and cURus approvals and is suited for applications according to IEC 60950. Versions are available with small leakage currents <80 µA (M80) or without leakage current <5 µA (M5) for medical equipment according to IEC/UL 60601-1.

> KFA: Compact power entry module with filter now with ground line choke
SCHURTER’s popular power entry module, KFA series, is now equipped with an additional ground line choke to suppress high frequency interference arising from ground loops on the ground line. In addition, the newly added ground line choke improves asymmetric attenuation in higher frequencies in medical filter versions. The KFA series with existing common-mode choke on the phase and neutral conductors, together with an additional ground line choke, is well enhanced to address the growing EMC challenges facing compliance engineers today.

Ground loops arise through different impedances of different ground line connections in one or multiple pieces of equipment. While all ground connections have the same potential level for the 50 Hz load current, these can have different potential levels for high-frequency interference. The ground line choke, which is wired between the power-inlet connector and the filter output, smartly addresses this phenomenon. Because of its placement directly at the power line input, high-frequency interference currents on the ground line are prevented from bypassing the filter through the equipment housing. The ground line choke isolates the equipment chassis against high frequencies and the equipment ground from the ground on the line power connection. This approach effectively breaks any possible ground loops.

Audio equipment for instance is known for being prone to ground loop problems. Often referred to as hum or buzz, the KFA, with ground line choke, is well suited for suppressing interferences that lead to diminished sound quality. The KFA is also well suited for medical equipment required to use low leakage filters for increased patient safety. The reduced Y capacitance to ground, or absence thereof, leads to reduced asymmetric attenuation in higher frequencies. The KFA with ground line choke helps to compensate for this reduced performance.

The KFA power entry module includes an IEC C14 power inlet connector with a 1- or 2-pole fuseholder and EMC filter and is available in a wide range of models and designs. The series offers current levels from 1A to 10A at 250 VAC according to IEC and UL standards. The series has ENEC and cURus approvals and is suited for applications according to IEC 60950. Special filter versions, M5 and M80, are available for medical devices according to IEC 60601-1. Wiring is done using quick-connect terminals or wire leads. The KFA is compatible with V-Lock cord sets, designed to safeguard against unintentional disconnection of the power.

> FMBC LL: Low leakage current 3-phase filter
SCHURTER expands its successful range of FMBC NEO 3-phase filters with a low leakage current series for applications where no high leakage currents are allowed. The new FMBC LL series of filters is designed for rated currents between 7 and 180 A. It is ideal for leakage current-critical industrial applications such as drive technology.

Today's electrical industrial installations are increasingly being fitted with residual current devices (RCD) to ensure efficient personal protection. This is also a requirement in certain countries for 3-phase systems, for example plug-in systems up to 32 A. The RCD limits the current to earth to a maximum of 30 mA. This poses a particular problem in drive technology since the frequency inverters that control the engine generate considerable leakage current. Long motor cables further aggravate the problem since they increase the capacity to earth and hence the currents to earth too. The new series of FMBC LL filters helps reduce the leakage currents and permits compliance with common EMC standards as an efficient input filter.

The compact FMBC LL 3-phase filters have been designed for currents from 7 A to 180 A at an ambient temperature of 50 °C. They have UL approvals for ambient temperatures of +50 °C as well as +40 °C at a higher rated current. The FMBC LL is approved for rated voltages of 520 VAC. This means that they can be used in high-power systems, such as machines used in an industrial environment. Despite their high output performance, they are still compact and lightweight in design.

The standard FMBC LL is fitted with a screw connection. Other types of connections including wires or copper bars are possible on request as well as customised modifications to the circuit or housing. SCHURTER also offers its own EMC measuring service for an optimum adjustment to the inverter. Therefore the most efficient filter solution for the system can be developed.
